These amazing fish can weigh over 1500 lbs, grow to 15 feet and can live well over 100 years. Access to these pre-historic monsters is generally a short ride up- or down-river via jet boat.

Fishing for Fraser River Sturgeon is a relaxing time as our professional and competent Sturgeon fishing guides do all the work setting lines, as well as dropping anchor in just the right spots. From informing you about the life cycle and habits of the Fraser River Sturgeon to helping you hook, fight and land one of these monsters, our Sturgeon fishing guides make the entire day a comfortable and enjoyable experience. For bigger groups, where 2 or more boats are required, groups will be able to stay together. Because Sturgeon rely almost entirely on scent to locate their food, boats can work together by anchoring near each other to maximize the scent trails being given off their bait! This means that 2 or more boats can literally fish close enough to talk to each other.

Once you get hooked up, our Sturgeon fishing guides will gently and knowledgeably coach you through everything from setting the hooks, right through playing the fish out and landing the fish for photos. As Sturgeon are scavengers, their activity levels peak during Fall months as spawning salmon complete their life cycle and provide a steady supply of food for the Fraser River Sturgeon. So while Sturgeon fishing can be productive year-round, we strongly recommend booking your charter from mid-September through November to maximize the potential opportunities for hook-ups. Good days on the water can result in well over 10 hook ups and will leave your arms tired and your camera full of great photos!

Fraser River Sturgeon

The White Sturgeon, Acipenser transmontanus, are large fish with no scales, but have bony scutes that serve as a form of armour. They range from gray to pale olive to gray-brown with a completely white underbelly and have four barbells, used for sensing food, near their huge toothless mouth. Their internal bone structure is very similar to that of a shark and Sturgeon have changed very little since they first appeared, over 175 million years ago. The White Sturgeon lives on the bottom of slow-moving rivers, bays, and estuarine areas, including the freshwater/saltwater mixed areas at the mouth of large rivers.

Fraser River: This unique fishery takes place on British Columbia’s longest river. The Fraser drains a 220,000 km2 area and flows for over 1375 km to reach the Pacific Ocean at Vancouver! The final 100-150 kms of the river make up a large delta that is the Fraser Valley, home to a healthy and protected population of White Sturgeon. Due to its’ size the Fraser River has a variety of conditions that are constantly changing with the weather and seasons. This variety of conditions provide just the right environments to support the range of habitats required by the White Sturgeon, including slower moving sections with both sandy and gravel-covered bottoms and a large, brackish river mouth.
